STEP LOGIC in ICT-Online's «Wi-Fi 6: the new technology overview»

The standards of the new 6th generation of Wi-Fi should be finally adopted by 2020. The Wi-Fi Alliance (formed of the Wi-Fi-related technology manufacturers), the IEEE Institute (develops and cerifies standards in electronics and communications) and other organizations are finalizing the final approval of the new Wi-Fi 6 wireless standard. It is expected that last details will be agreed upon by the end of this year, and the equipment supporting the new standard will appear on the market in large numbers. Maxim Pikulin, Director of Network Solutions at STEP LOGIC, told ICT-Online about the prospects of the new Wi-Fi 6 standard development.

What's your opinion on the technology itself and the prospects for its use in the corporate segment?

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is a new wireless network standard that will provide significantly higher data transmission speed, reduce delays and increase bandwidth.
At the moment, wireless data networks are becoming a mandatory, and sometimes even critical component of the IT infrastructure of almost any company, which is required for the stable functioning of business systems, services and applications. The new standard will open up great opportunities for widespread digitalization of enterprises and the introduction of the Internet of things, it will contribute to a significant expansion of the number of connected wireless devices and support the trend of explosive IP traffic growth in wireless networks.

It is beyond doubt that it will take some time for companies to actually implement and start fully using the new standard and to appreciate all its advantages. And this is because the official adoption of the standard, and the development of a fleet of client devices supporting the new standard is still required. Nevertheless, it is already necessary to consider the Wi-Fi 6 standard when creating or upgrading a wireless network in order to lay the necessary basis for a long-period operation of networks and get advantages in the future.
